No. I’m not turning red. I was born blue and can’t see that ever changing. I’m writing to share an idea about how to turn some of the people who are decidedly red against Trump and maybe the entire GOP. This fits right in with the whole “be the pebble” thing. First a little backstory.
A couple of weeks ago I was listening to NPR. They were interviewing a farmer from Missouri, a decidedly and clearly very red state. He had taken out a large loan for improvements to his farm. He did the improvements with the backing of a federal grant program that was supposed to pay for the improvements. And what happened? Trump’s withholding of funding and cuts canceled the expected payment. Said farmer is now on the hook for a loan he believes he won’t be able to repay. He may need to file for bankruptcy. So how can you be the pebble? When you talk to someone who lives in a red area, be it a state or congressional district, who complains about a Trump cut hurting them encourage them to make calls, to write letters. To whom? Their GOP Senators and Representatives. Right now the MAGA world is quiet about the Trump/Musk chaos, not exercising the balance of power expected of them in the Constitution. Part of this is fear. Fear that Trump will back a primary challenger, so called “primary” them. It’s also fear of Musk. Dear old Elon has already threatened GOP members of Congress who have criticized Trump, saying that if they don’t back down his PAC will spend some of his billions backing a challenger. As a case in point take a look at Sen. Joni Ernst from Iowa. She was expected to vote against confirming Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. And after a call with Elon? She said she’d vote for confirmation. Coincidence?
So take a minute and think. What does a politician worry about most? In general it’s getting reelected. I’ve already read stories of record volumes of calls coming into the Capitol. What if we get our friends, our GOP/MAGA friends to start making calls? What if they are complaining about how Trump and Elon are personally hurting them. Will the fearful (spineless?) members of the GOP start to worry about the wrath of their voters more than Trump’s revenge and Elon’s money? Time will tell. It’s worth a try.
P.S. Sorry for the earlier send of the partial post. I clicked “post” instead of “save”.
