My great uncle fought in the Battle of the Bulge 75 years ago. That’s all I know. As my grandfather said more than once, those that see things in war never talk about it.
Related, a few years ago I was in Luxembourg. I visited the cemetery where many killed in that battle are buried. Patten is there too. I went to honor their sacrifices and because there aren’t many left who remember. I was there just before 9 in the morning. I was the second set of steps in the dew in the grass. I walked the cemetery alone. We can’t ever forget. We’re seeing enough to make clear it can happen again. If we allow it to? Then we not only are complicit, we are also dishonoring those who gave so much to stop it the first time.
