My Choice: Stay and Fight

I’ve talked to friends about the possibility that I’d apply for political asylum in France if Trump won again.  I just can’t do it.  Too many people have died to advance the causes of fairness and justice in this country.  I’m thinking about those who died in Europe fighting Nazism and Fascism.  I cannot dishonor the sacrifices of Andrew GoodmanMichael Schwerner, James Reeb, Viola Liuzzo, and Jonathan Daniels.  All of them were white.  All of them could have stayed safe in their northern homes.  They didn’t.  All went to Mississippi and Alabama to fight for civil rights, for equality, for voting rights.  All were murdered.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a
socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Trump has pledged to arrest and deport as many as eleven million people that he believes don’t belong in this country.

Trump has committed to prosecuting his enemies.  No one is safe.  He specifically named Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi.  His list includes Democrats, it includes donors to the Harris/Walz campaign.  He tried to use the Justice Department against his enemies during his prior term.  We were fortunate that his Attorneys General resisted.  This time have no doubt that he will appoint a loyalist that will follow his orders.  And with a 53 seat majority it’s likely that his Republican Senate acolytes will approve his appointment.

Every time I heard Kamala Harris speak I had the same thought: “That’s the country I want to live in”.  Unfortunately, Trump’s election is a reminder of the country that we have always lived in, the country that we are.

I don’t plan to be the last one.  The time for me, for all of us, to speak. to act is now.

They can’t jail us all.  They can’t kill us all.

I am the enemy from within.
